Help Nicolás Garcia Cepeda Get a Motorcycle and a Phone to Keep Doing What He Loves

During a family vacation to Colombia in March 2025, we had the joy of meeting Nicolás, a local guide from the small mountain town of Guadalupe. He welcomed us to Las Gachas, a magical river nestled in a peaceful rural valley, known for its smooth rock formations and dozens of naturally carved, round waterholes. But what truly made our visit unforgettable was Nicolás himself.

From the moment we met him, Nicolás impressed us with his warmth, positivity, and gentle spirit. He guided us—two adults and two children—on a 3-hour ecological tour for an incredibly modest fee. Throughout the experience, he was patient, attentive, and deeply knowledgeable. He took the time to explain the geology, history, and biodiversity of the region with passion and care. It was clear that he genuinely loves his land and his work—and wants others to love it too.

As we spent more time with him, we learned that Nicolás walks four hours a day—two hours each way—on foot from his home in the mountains to reach Las Gachas. He works long days and yet earns very little. Despite these challenges, he remains fully committed to giving each visitor a meaningful and enriching experience.

We also discovered that Nicolás has a talent for photography. Even with a very basic phone, he has taken some incredible photos and has participated in local contests. Sadly, his current phone is no longer working—but with the right tools, he could further explore this passion and potentially generate additional income for himself and his family.

Nicolás is currently saving to buy a motorcycle to shorten his daily commute and a working phone or camera to continue developing his photography skills.

Durante unas vacaciones familiares en Colombia en marzo de 2025, tuvimos la dicha de conocer a Nicolás, un guía local del pequeño pueblo montañoso de Guadalupe. Él nos recibió con los brazos abiertos en Las Gachas, un río mágico ubicado en un tranquilo valle rural, conocido por sus formaciones rocosas lisas y decenas de pozas naturales redondas esculpidas por el paso del tiempo. Pero lo que realmente hizo que nuestra visita fuera inolvidable fue Nicolás.

Desde el primer momento, Nicolás nos impresionó con su calidez, positividad y espíritu amable. Nos guió —a dos adultos y dos niños— en un recorrido ecológico de 3 horas por un precio increíblemente modesto. Durante toda la experiencia fue paciente, atento y muy conocedor del lugar. Se tomó el tiempo para explicarnos con pasión y detalle la geología, historia y biodiversidad de la región. Era evidente que ama profundamente su tierra y su trabajo—y quiere que otros también lo amen.

A medida que lo fuimos conociendo, nos enteramos de que Nicolás camina cuatro horas al día—dos de ida y dos de vuelta—desde su casa en las montañas hasta Las Gachas. Trabaja largas jornadas y aun así gana muy poco. A pesar de estos desafíos, sigue comprometido a brindar la mejor experiencia posible a cada visitante.

También descubrimos que Nicolás tiene un gran talento para la fotografía. Incluso con un teléfono muy básico ha logrado tomar fotos increíbles y ha participado en concursos locales. Lamentablemente, su teléfono actual ya no funciona. Con las herramientas adecuadas, podría continuar desarrollando esta pasión y quizás generar ingresos adicionales para él y su familia.

Nicolás está actualmente ahorrando para comprar una motocicleta que le permita reducir el tiempo de su trayecto diario, y un teléfono funcional o una cámara para seguir desarrollando sus habilidades fotográficas.
