"Rico"/Teddi was adopted from a kill shelter in Devore, California on 5/25/25. Rico was brought into the shelter when the owner passed away along with 9 other dogs and 15 cats. Rico is estimated to be around 8 to 9 years old. Rico's coat was matted with dirt and urine--it was clear some TLC was definitely needed and grooming nor dental care appeared to have ever been done.

We took Rico to our family veterinarian within two hours of leaving the shelter where a medical treatment plan was started. We started with two different oral antibiotics for an upper respiratory infection as well as an ear regimen for a triple ear infection. We also found out that Rico is NOT an unaltered male (as the rescue claimed) but rather a spayed female! Imagine our surprise when we figured this out. She does have significant matting making it difficult to easily examine her, but we also believe it's unlikely the shelter gave her any kind of proper examination.

We have named her Teddi, which fits her teddy bear demeanor perfectly. She is a sweet senior girl with a calm and gentle soul. She has quickly figured out she loves to sleep on the couch. Weighing in just shy of 95 lbs, she takes up a bit of room but doesn't mind sharing the couch with you.

Now for the hard part...Teddi's heath issues are extensive. She has a large mass inside her right nasal area that is most likely a tumor but we're still ruling out other potentials. Her gate is slow, most likely from advanced arthritis. Yesterday, we did another recheck at the vet and did extensive blood work to see what we can learn. We should get results in the next few days.

Many of her teeth are fractured and so therefore are in need of extraction. She also needs to undergo extensive dematting which needs to be done under anesthesia, once it is safe for her to do so.

The goal here is for a better quality of life and to make her feel loved, safe and comfortable.

Many of you followed and shared "Rico"/Teddi's story and were touched to hear she had been adopted and saved from euthanasia. You also asked how you can help. If any part of this story touches you and you have the means, we created this page to help cover some of Teddi's medical costs. 100% of these funds will go to Teddi's medical bills and care. Any amount $1 or $5 is appreciated. Most importantly, adopt and don’t buy, and please support your favorite animal charities. Thank you! We will keep you updated on Teddi's journey
