My Name is Simon Starns. I am a member of Boy Scouts of America, specifically from Troop 21. Many years ago, I had the opportunity to help the homeless in downtown Oklahoma City by serving them food at Hotdogs for the Homeless. I really enjoyed getting to talk to the homeless. This stuck with me for a long time and I often wondered how I could help more. Last year, Sister Barbara Joseph visited youth group at church and talked about her focus on helping the homeless. She showed us pictures of people that she had helped and how it made them smile. I wanted to help more so I volunteered to go down to her pantry with my family to make and serve pancakes to the homeless.
Sr. BJ's charity program is known as "Sister BJ's pantry." She has a mission of feeding every unfortunate man and woman in Oklahoma City. She models this after the Corporal Works of Mercy. The Corporal Works of Mercy are to feed the hungry, give drink to the thirsty, ransom the captive, bury the dead, shelter the stranger, comfort the sick, and clothe the naked.
One of her key focuses is to feed the hungry. She does this by going out every Friday and Sunday to cook and hand out food to unfortunate people in Oklahoma City. I have worked at the pantry and noticed an issue. An extremely large amount of people had to stand while eating. Ever since then, I have been looking for a solution to assist. When I was thinking about my eagle scout project, I figured out how to do it. I decided I was going to build 4 tables for sister BJ's pantry. I discussed this with Sr. Barbara Joseph and she said this would be very helpful.
