⚡ An Inspiring Story of a Young Survivor ⚡️
Keegan was born in February 2011, during a blizzard, 2 weeks late, and beating the odds Since day 1. She arrived with bright ginger Hair like me and her father’s big blue eyes. It became clear quickly that she was strong-willed, fierce, and fiery (I did not know this at the time, but fierce and fiery is the definition Of the name Keegan) When I was 24 and Keegan was just under a year old I found the strength to leave an abusive and violent relationship with her father.
In the middle of the night on January 1st, 2012 I made our escape. I took her, the pack-and-play, and one backpack of belongings, got in my car, and started driving. I didn’t have a destination but I knew anywhere else would be a safer environment than where we were.
Over the next 4 years, I fought to rebuild and stabilize our future. I worked hard to save her from her Fathers's toxic ways but fathers have their rights and after exhausting all my savings and financial resources in court battles with someone who had unlimited resources and financials I was forced to accept the split parenting time. Needless to say, anyone who has been in similar situations knows that a narcissistic abuser is and always will be toxic for everyone involved with them ESPECIALLY their children resulting in trauma (which Keegan suffers from) that lasts well into their adult lives. In 2014 I finally regained enough stability for Keegan and moved into our first 2 bedroom apartment.
Before that, we had been living in a Domestic violence safe house while going through the restraining order process. We then moved and stayed in a decent motel down by the boardwalk in Point Pleasant New Jersey for a bit while I worked to save nd move us into a more permanent home environment.
See Keegan and I do not have much family nor do we come from a family with disposable income. I did my best with what I had in my early days as a single mom.
Shortly after moving into our first stable home, my daughter was struck by an unspeakable tragedy. Keegan, 4 y/o, was faced with every child’s worst nightmare. She went into her father’s room to wake him up and found him unresponsive. After witnessing the EMTs and paramedics' failed attempt at resuscitation I received the phone call that still echoes in my head 8 years later. No matter how toxic the relationship was between him and me, this news was devastating for me and my heart was broken for my daughter.
I immediately put her into trauma counseling, however, still to this day she struggles with PTSD because of that unthinkable traumatic experience. I didn’t know how to begin to cope and be the sole guardian of this young, brave, incredibly intelligent child.
I was trying to navigate life while being a young single parent, attending Georgian Court University as a special education instructor and Chemistry Major, and working full time. Quickly These became some of my darkest moments as I tried to reclaim my identity and self-worth while juggling motherhood alone. Unfortunately, depression and severe anxiety became unbearable for me. As a result, I began self-medicating with anything I could get my hands on to escape my current reality and suppress the overwhelming emotions that were causing extreme depression and anxiety. Before this dark time drugs were in NO WAY part of my life. I was a scholar and a lifelong athlete. I knew the dangers Of drug use but the Unsettling truth was the depression anxiety, loneliness, and years of abuse I had suffered made me weak and I resorted to unhealthy coping skills to deal Before I knew it the drugs were controlling every aspect of me and my life. In the depths of despair, I found myself battling not just the demons within, but also the fear of losing the most precious thing in my life: my daughter.
As a solo mother, my journey was fraught with obstacles but none more daunting than my addiction. It took me to my knees sucking every ounce of life out of me and taking everything I had worked so hard for up until then. Before I knew it I was homeless again, depressed, and broken but this time without my daughter. Child protective services had stepped in, placing her in my mother‘s care while I continued trudging my battle with addiction. In 2016 with every ounce of strength I could muster, I fought tooth and nail to reclaim my life and, most importantly, regain custody of my beloved daughter.
It wasn't easy; there were setbacks, tears, and moments when giving up seemed the only option. Yet, through sheer determination and unwavering resolve, I emerged from the darkness, sober and ready to rewrite our story. Today 8 years sober I stand as a testament to the power of redemption, a beacon of hope for all those facing their battles. With my daughter by my side, we will continue together in spreading our message of motivation and empowering others struggling to change their mindset from a victim to a survivor and thrive.
Today we are educated on Mental Health, The cycle of domestic violence, finding gratitude, having perspective, being compassionate, and using breathwork, mindfulness, and meditation to improve our lives. I am passionate about getting these tools out to others who are struggling so I am returning to school in August to finish my degree in holistic and Mental health.
Besides recently becoming a Volunteer EMT, I am currently a DV survivor mentor and coach, peer support detox and recovery specialist, neurodivergent educator and expert advocate as well as a professionally certified meditation and breath work optimization coach. Helping others has always been my passion, and now I'm asking for your help in return.
Keegan and I have Survived homelessness, domestic violence, you name it. But through it all, we've stood strong, supporting each other every step of the way.
She's a remarkable 13-year-old, a true Neurodivergent Trendsetter, and my ultimate inspiration.
I have created this fundraising post to not only find financial support but to bring awareness to the importance of our mission.
No donation is too small, and every contribution will make a meaningful impact on my lives. Please consider supporting RebelFlow Wellness as we navigate this new and exciting life chapter and work towards a brighter future together.
Thank you for your kindness, generosity, and compassion. Together, I am certain we can overcome any and all obstacles we face and build a brighter tomorrow for Keegan, me, and all rebels that are ready to kick conformity in the teeth.
