Hi, I am Emma Peets; I am attending Southern Methodist University, where I am earning my Bachelor of Arts degree in Psychology. Since 2019, my family and I have lived part-time in Los Cabos. Since then, my family has become very involved with the non-profit organization, Chileno Bay Foundation, in many projects that make Los Cabo a safer, healthier place. Throughout my time in Los Cabos, I have had the opportunity to visit and volunteer at many of the Food Kitchens that the Los Cabos Food Bank supports. I have had the pleasure of experiencing the passion, kindness, and dedication of those who have devoted their homes, jobs, and free time to help their neighbors.
I wholeheartedly believe that the wealth gap in Los Cabos is significant. It can be relieved by spreading awareness and forming connections between those who travel to Los Cabos to vacation and those who live and work there full-time and struggle to support their loved ones. Many members of the at-risk communities work 12-hour shifts daily to support their children and families, and I believe it is unjust that hard-working people face a daily struggle of hunger and access to good, nutritious food.
Currently, in Baja California Sur, good quality food products are available in local markets; however, they are economically inaccessible to the majority of the local population of Los Cabos. Hundreds of working-class families, including farmers, distributors, and educators, do not have access to nutritious food. Due to the lack of accessibility, around 70 community food kitchens have been formed in Los Cabos by caring and passionate individuals looking to make a difference and help those in their communities. However, these kitchens often need more financial means to support at-risk families, maintain kitchen facilities, and upkeep a weekly food supply—the Los Cabos Food Bank partners with 61 food kitchens, providing over 600,000 meals annually. However, there are still thousands of families suffering from malnutrition that need our help. One of the most significant financial challenges the Food Bank faces is that operational costs heavily outweigh the funds from donors and grants.
Working this summer with the Chileno Bay Foundation has inspired me to create this campaign to raise $10,000 for the Food Bank of Los Cabos. That money will go directly to the Food Bank in its efforts to ensure effective and equitable collection and delivery to those in need and fortify communities by providing support to those most vulnerable.
Hunger is more than missing a meal; it's a barrier to thriving – a barrier we can dismantle together. Join me in achieving our $10,000 goal for the Los Cabos Food Bank, helping nurture our community, and reinforcing the pillars of food security in Los Cabos. With your help, we can sow the seeds of change that will bloom for generations.
THANK YOU!!
