My name is Sarah Wilken-Harris, and I am trying to raise money for my dad, David Wilken for his out of network cancer treatment. Dave was diagnosed this past January with a rare and aggressive undifferentiated radiation induced sarcoma in the back of his neck. This tumor is a result of the previous cancer treatment he received for Squamous cell carcinoma in his right tonsil 10 years ago. This is his second battle with cancer, and this time treatment options are more limited since he cannot have radiation due to the cancer being caused from high levels of radiation. He has gone through several rounds of chemo to help shrink the tumor since it is very close to his spinal cord, back of his skull, and around a major artery. The next step is hopefully surgery however the neurosurgeons in Arizona do not feel comfortable performing the surgery. Dave was forced to go out of network to the MD Anderson Cancer Center in Houston where they have more experience and sarcoma specialists. He has to meet with another round of doctors and go through some of the same tests out of pocket. He is looking at least 20,000 out of pocket to cover the surgery in Texas. This is obviously a very difficult and stressful time and a lot of expense to someone who is retired and will no longer be able to work after treatment. He is fighting for his family, especially his wife who has cognitive impairment and can’t drive or work. I would love to have him see his last grandchildren graduate high school. He is a fighter and has made it through a tougher chemo schedule, double pneumonia, and a feeding tube since the combined side effects from previous treatment to current treatment have made swallowing very difficult. Anything helps, especially prayers and good thoughts, and appreciate you taking the time to read Dave’s story.
