Capital City Cancer Classic NJ is a nonprofit organization whose mission is to advocate, educate, encourage, and support the community regarding various types of cancers, especially in underserved areas of color. The organization was founded in 2019 by two-time cancer survivor Joe Richardson, who was a basketball coach during both bouts with cancer. To give back, CCCCNJ hosts an annual basketball showcase designed to raise funds for reputable cancer treatment centers, provide scholarships to high school seniors pursuing post-secondary educational opportunities, and support local families dealing with cancer.
In 2020, CCCCNJ held its first annual basketball showcase. This successful event resulted in a $6000 donation to Fox Chase Cancer Center, a $500 senior book scholarship, and the financial and emotional support of a local family dealing with cancer. In 2021, the Covid pandemic prevented the event; however, in 2022, CCCCNJ donated $7500 to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, awarded three (3) $1000 senior scholarships, and provided emotional and financial support to another family affected by cancer. CCCCNJ increased its outreach by donating $7500 to the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society in 2023 and $7500 to Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center in 2024. The Class of 2023 had three seniors who received $1000 scholarships toward post-secondary educational opportunities, and the Class of 2024 had five seniors who received the same $1000 award. CCCCNJ has donated nearly $29,000 to reputable cancer centers and almost $12,000 to seniors pursuing higher education while supporting a local family each year.
On February 1, 2025, we are excited to host our fifth annual showcase, which will benefit the Penn Medicine Abramson Cancer Center, one of the few select cancer centers in the country awarded the prestigious designation of Comprehensive Cancer Center by the National Cancer Institute. After each game, CCCCNJ dedicates the Eli Ingram Most Outstanding Player Award to a player who exemplifies a positive attitude, team mindset, grit, and leadership. Eli was a CCCCNJ honoree who lost his battle with cancer in 2021 at the age of 13. In his short lifespan, he touched many lives with his positive attitude, encouraging words, kind heart, team mindset, and intelligence. By donating to this GoFundMe page, you will assist us in reaching our fundraising goal and help share the message that no one fights cancer alone.
