On the evening of June 8th, Betty Lou was returning from the National SPAMFAA Muster in York Pa, when her front drivers side tire started smoking. Owner Joel and his Wife Courtney, quickly pulled Betty over and tried to extinguish the fire with a fire extinguisher, bottles of water, and anything they could get their hands on while waiting on the fire department to arrive. During this time, the flames became larger and the tire exploded. After the fire was extinguished, she was then towed back to Arundel Volunteer Fire Department where she will be stored temporarily until the full extent of her damage can be assessed and plans for repair can be made.
Joel has been working tirelessly over the past three years to restore Betty. He has spent a large amount of the funding he had to restore Betty, including recent repairs the week before the incident. She came out of the shop this past Thursday with a bill of $2500, and now the tow bill of $1500. Any help to get her back on the road would be a huge help! At this point we are expecting she is going to need new brakes, new seals, front axle, a rim, and an entire brake system for the front end.
Betty Lou means so much to so many people for so many different reasons. Next weekend, she was scheduled to be in Ocean City, MD for the Maryland State Fireman's Convention to be on display and honor the fallen. We all will be missing that beautiful Jake running down the Coastal Highway this year.
We are also still selling T-Shirts, so if you would like to help donate by buying a T-Shirt, please send our Facebook page a message. The link to Betty Lou's Facebook page is below.
Donations will be used to help get her towed back to the Virginia Fire Museum in Roanoke and the many repairs she will need.
Thank you all for your love and support for Betty Lou.
