Johnshaven is a special place to live. In normal times it is made better still by the regular activities, events and communal places run by local organisations and their volunteers.
This has obviously all changed in 2020 with many groups like Guides or Indoor Bowling unable to run and village venues and spaces closed for much of the year. Groups have been without regular income and, with annual events like the Fish Festival and Christmas Fair cancelled, they haven't had a chance to raise funds for their activities.
Hopefully 2021 is going to be much kinder. It may take time but bit by bit we hope that life is going to return to something nearer to normal in our village and across the world. This fundraiser is about recognising the fantastic work that is done by the voluntary groups in Johnshaven on our behalf and giving them a financial boost to help them with their plans for the future.
This fundraiser is being coordinated through the Village Hall Committee and all funds raised will be shared equally between the established community organisations in the village. To promote this fundraiser, we have created a special Facebook page where you can find out more - and also take part in our free-to-enter prize draws and quizzes!
Here's a quick overview of the Groups that work so hard to make our village so special!
Coastal Colourists – a group of local creative artists who meet on a regular basis to enjoy painting, sketching, sharing ideas and hosting annual art events.
Community Garden – a very active team who keep our beautiful garden on the old railway line looking like a Chelsea Flower Show installation.
Fireworks – the annual spectacular that like all other village events showcases our wonderful community spirit and celebrates the amazing generosity of residents and local businesses.
First Responders - fundraising for upkeep and replacements for our village defibrillators
Fish Festival Management Group – a major source of fundraising for village residents and groups, and always great fun too!
Friends of Johnshaven School (FOJS) – organisation of parents and staff supporting the school and its various activities.
Games Club – opportunities for all ages to gather and enjoy each other’s company with a round of indoor bowls at the Village Hall.
Guides – where our daughters can laugh, learn and have amazing adventures in a safe and creative environment.
Heritage Society – curating and preserving artifacts and stories from our rich and varied built and cultural heritage.
Horticultural Society – hosting yearly events including the Flower Show, promoting the horticultural, creative, baking and lemon curd making talents that are abundant in our community.
Johnshaven Athletic – our local football team that graces the hallowed turf at Wairds Park.
Johnshaven Bowling Club - promoting social wellbeing and healthy outdoor exercise for all at the Wairds Park Bowling Green.
RNLI – although it is a national institution, it benefits from the efforts of coastal communities like Johnshaven in promoting local lifeboat activities and safety at sea.
SHARK – a lively team of volunteers who not only collect and compost our green waste, but also arrange beach clean-ups in conjunction with national marine conservation initiatives.
Village Hall Committee - continually improving our fantastically versatile community asset, promoting arts, crafts, events and much more besides.
Wairds Park Committee – managing all our community-owned assets at the Park, providing recreational, sporting and kids play facilities for all.
Our target is to raise £1500 by the 31st March 2021.
