Help John Kinsel Reenter Society After 28 Stolen Years

Donation protected
On September 10, 2025, John Kinsel was released from Elayn Hunt Correctional Center in St. Gabriel, Louisiana after 28 years of wrongful conviction and incarceration. John plans to use his freedom to move on from this nightmare, but needs your support to help make that happen.

Originally sentenced to life without parole, John’s release is a testament to the evidence supporting his innocence. In 2006, John's accuser recanted her testimony in a court of law. Despite efforts to suppress this information and threats from the district attorney, the victim, John, and their families fought tirelessly for his freedom for over two decades. Their work has finally succeeded.

Over the years, John rejected multiple plea deals that would have secured his release if he admitted guilt. John was a trustee while at Elayn Hunt and was regularly allowed to work beyond the prison walls. He is a soft-spoken, generous man who tended to fellow inmates during times of need. Both staff and inmates repeatedly voiced to us their belief in his innocence and good nature.

He plans to celebrate his newfound freedom by making jewelry and spending time with his partner, children, and grandchildren. To support John in these endeavors, please donate to help him start up his new life. Funds will go to housing, clothing, and seeking employment.

This fundraiser is organized, with permission from John and his attorney, by some of John's advocates who were with him when he walked out.
