HE HELPED US…NOW WE MUST HELP HIM
Hi. My name is Ashleigh Banfield and I am an American television journalist. In 2001 I met Jawad (name protected) in Afghanistan, and he began working with my NBC News team as a translator and fixer. He saved our lives several times as I reported nightly from the war zone for MSNBC. He went on to serve the United States Armed Forces as a translator and cultural liaison officer for the next 20 years. His dedication to the US and it’s mission was so exemplary, he was pictured side-by-side with United States President, George W. Bush. Because of his work, he and his family have now been targeted by the Taliban… beaten and threatened. It took several days, but a mighty digital Dunkirk team, through our various contacts in military and media, were able to rescue Jawad’s family and get them on an evacuation flight to Qatar. They’ve been there several days waiting to be processed before hopefully departing soon for the United States to reunite with him. Four of them are US citizens, four of them are not. They escaped with one school-size backpack each. And life is now going to be very difficult for them all. I, along with my “Digital Dunkirk “ team, am committed to helping Jawad after he committed to helping us. We’d like to ask you if you will join us in our effort to help his family survive their next few months.
Many thanks,
Ashleigh Banfield
