One of Besnard Lake's finest fishing guides, Jason Halkett, passed away on Monday
September 2 due to complications of a genetic condition that he had dealt with for many years, without complaint of course, because that was Jason.
Jason was 41 years & a loving husband to Tracy Halkett for 19 years. Together they have 3 beautiful children, Teejay (16 years old), Tyson (9 years) & Jessica (6 years).
Jason started guiding on Besnard Lake when he was 16 years old. Not only did he guide, he enjoyed trapping & wild rice harvesting in the off season. Besnard Lake was home to him. It is where he felt closest to his mother that passed away when he was a child. Jason knows Besnard & all the nuances of the land as good as anyone. In the winter he could be found snowmobiling around the lake checking traps & stoking the wood stove in his cabin. We know at least one fellow guide that owes his life to Jason.
Jason had many nicknames, but the one we found most amusing & may have caused some tension between all the guides was when we gave him a t-shirt with the initials B.F.G. which stood for Big Friendly Giant because, as you all know, that is what he was. Jason quickly turned it into Best Fishing Guide just to get a rise out of his fellow guides, in-laws & brother.
Jason had a wit, intelligence & a kind soul that we all benefitted from. Kelly always looked forward to picking up Jason for a day of guiding because they could relate to one another. If Kelly was in the "dog-house" mid June (the busiest fishing/outfitting month) when Sara was at home battling it out with with the kids there was a good chance Jason was in that house too, guide-wife life is not always easy on the family. So, Kelly & Jason would have a good chuckle about it, send each other a goofy meme (this was daily) & carry on. Jason's hearty laugh will carry on in our hearts forever.
God speaks to us through nature, Romans 1:20. We feel that Jason is still surrounding us in the forest of northern Saskatchewan. His gentle soul & character will forever be remembered. Grief doesn't necessarily get easier with time but time will allow us move on & create new memories but the exemplary life Jason led will live on forever.
We have started this go fund me as an answer to those of you that have been asking us how you can donate to the family. We will also have a commemorative hat available for the 2025 fishing season. All proceeds will go to Tracy & the kids. Thank you for your support & kind words in this difficult week.
Please keep Jason's family in your prayers as they move forward. Time does not stand still. Thank you.
