Jason's Eagle Project: Making chess BIG again

Donation protected
My name is Jason Cledes, a Boy Scout from Troop 49B in Beverly. I'm working on my Eagle Scout Service Project, which involves creating 2 life-size chess boards: a portable one and a permanent one to be painted on the pool deck in Forest River Park, a part of the Salem Recreation Department. My project requires me to plan, fundraise, and lead a team of volunteer painters and mobile unit designers. I need to troubleshoot and manage the entire project. The goal of my project is to create a fun and educational chess experience for kids and others to learn.

My benefactor, the Salem Recreation Department, empowers everyone to have access to open spaces. Life-size chess requires critical thinking and encourages people to socialize without using social media apps, among other things. The portable chess set will be 8’x 8’ and be compact, lightweight, and easy to assemble. The board is a durable plastic and can be rolled up or dismantled. It will include ramps to prevent tripping and be more accessible for everyone. It is a good way to get more of the community involved at community events sponsored by Salem. The permanent board will be painted on the pool deck at Forest River Park. It will be 8’2” x 8’2”. I am using primer and non-skid epoxy paint, and a sealant to create a board that will last for years. The chess pieces will fit on a 1’ x 1’ square and be weighed down using sand. I am also creating a “How to Play Chess” laminated document to help people learn and teach the game.

Life-size chess is beneficial for people physically, intellectually, and emotionally. It involves being outside. It teaches people critical thinking skills and helps build confidence. Growing up, I was not very social. As I learned chess, I became confident enough to set up a Chess club at school and became more social. I need to purchase materials for my project, like epoxy paint, tarps, tools, chess pieces, and more. I would be grateful for any contributions you can make to help me complete my project. Thank you in advance.
