Janice and David's Dominican Republic Mission

Hi, my name is Janice and my dad recently passed away peacefully.  He grew up in the Philippines and while he didn't struggle, he knew first hand how living in a 3rd world country could bring much poverty and destitution.  So, in honor of his memory, my family would like to support the mission I spent a few years going to in the Dominican Republic care of Jesus' call to help the poor.  From 2016 - 2018, I would go with my church to the poor town of Sosua to help build homes for the homeless families.  We also did other missions like visit the hospital and support the special needs orphanage (Caza Nazaret) run solely by one of the Sisters there.  We are very fortunate in Canada to have services to assist the homeless and special needs children but there, this is not their reality.  Many cannot afford caring for their own healthy family members, but children born with a disability are cast aside as they require too much care and financial support.  The other missionaries and myself would also go to the garbage dump to provide the one healthy meal that they would have that day to those living off the garbage.  Coincidentally, a lot of the garbage would come from the resorts where you and I would travel to yearly (places that we would consider "paradise" on earth) only to share our waste with those individuals living off the dump.  Yet, despite these hardships, this is a country that has no concept of mental health illness or suicide - it's just not part of life and everyday vocabulary down there.  So, I would love to be able to dedicate a home to a poor family there in honor of my dad - the selected family will never have to worry about their home being washed away by torrential rain nor flooding, nor will they have to worry about unwanted creatures roaming about their home.  The DR Samaritan Foundation builds homes with proper sanitation and infrastructure.  This is where I will direct the funds and ensure a family in Sosua can live without these kinds of worries (feel free to google this foundation for more details).  Raising $7000 CDN will provide a modest home (500 square feet, approximately the size of 2 garages) with 2 small bedrooms, a shower, a living room, and kitchen.  I hope to raise this by Easter.
