Hello, my name is James Bodendorf. I am a Life Scout with Boy Scout Troop 123 in Merrick, New York . I am currently working on my project for my Eagle Scout rank which will be putting together care packages for nursing home residents at Sunharbor Manor in Roslyn Heights NY.


In one way or another, we have all been affected by the Covid-19 pandemic. But there is one group of our community which has been greatly affected, and they are the nursing home residents. We have all seen on the news how nursing homes even closed to outside visitors and their residents were limited to only seeing their loved ones through the building windows. 


Although some restrictions have been lifted recently and nursing home residents are allowed 1 or 2 visitors at a time, it is limited to very short visits and most residents still must remain in their room throughout the day. This may not last long though.  With a second wave of Covid-19 sweeping across our nation, unfortunately nursing homes may need to shut down to outside visitors once again. 


This gave me the idea for my Eagle Scout Project, which is to put together "cheer-me-up" care packages with items like lap blankets, fuzzy socks, word searches, crosswords, and various arts and craft materials. My hope is that these care packages will put a smile on the nursing home residents' faces, let them know they are not forgotten about and still loved members of our community.
