Hello, my name is Jake Zuckerman and I am a scout from Troop 2079 in New City, New York. At 16 years old, I am a Life scout working towards the rank of Eagle (the highest rank in scouting). A major step in achieving the rank of Eagle is completing the Eagle Scout Service Project. The purpose of an Eagle project is to build and demonstrate the scout’s leadership skills while also completing a service project that will benefit the community. My Eagle Scout Service Project will take place at Camp Homeward Bound in Harriman State Park. My project will be to build two new boat racks that will hold kayaks, canoes, paddles, and life vests. Along with building the racks, I will clean up the waterfront area where the boat racks will be placed. This will include taking down and removing the old boat racks, pulling weeds, etc. Each boat rack will be able to hold up to 8 boats, which will provide storage for the 14 boats they currently own. The current boat racks at Camp Homeward Bound are deteriorating and need to be replaced with new ones before the start of the upcoming summer season.
Camp Homeward Bound is a camp in Harriman State Park that is run by the Coalition for the Homeless and welcomes hundreds of homeless children and teens from New York City each summer season. The camp allows them to participate in activities such as biking, gardening, boating, and more. The new boat racks will help the waterfront run smoothly and allow the kids to enjoy their time boating at camp. All donations will benefit the Coalition for the Homeless, Camp Homeward Bound, the children that attend Camp Homeward Bound for summers to come.
