Eagle Scout Project, Jacob John - Ga Ga Ball Pit

Donation protected
My name is Jacob John and I am a Boy Scout from Troop 918 in Severna Park, MD.  I am currently a Life Scout which is the final rank before becoming an Eagle Scout.  The last step before I obtain Eagle Scout is to demonstrate my leadership of others while performing a project that benefits the community.  My Eagle Scout project is to construct a Ga-Ga ball pit at my local park, Lake Waterford Park, that would allow the community to experience an exciting activity that can be enjoyed by all with different skills.

Lake Waterford  Park offers many options for recreation such as fishing, football, soccer, baseball, basketball, or tennis. The park also provides a comprehensive adaptive sports program run through Anne Arundel County for families with special needs. Once my Ga-Ga ball pit is complete, the adaptive sports program is planning to add Ga-Ga ball into the rotation.

What is Ga-Ga ball?
Ga-Ga ball is a variant of dodge ball that is played in a Ga-Ga "pit"(video example below). I learned of this game through the many scout camps I've attended. The game combines hand-eye coordination, agility, dodging, running, and jumping, all connected to strategy with the objective of avoiding the ball touching them. Players use their hands as "a racket" to hit the ball at the opponent's feet, and players are eliminated if the ball strikes them below the knees.

About Lake Waterford Park
Lake Waterford Park is a local park a few minutes from my house where I have fished, hiked and played for years. The park is a 108 acres diverse natural land with a large playground, athletic fields, tennis courts, hiking trails and a 12-acre lake  for fishing or watching waterfowl.  Currently, there is an adaptive recreation baseball field (Freedom Field) that includes a multipurpose field overlay, which is covered with a rubberized, wheelchair accessible surface. The field supports a variety of activities, to include baseball, softball, lacrosse, soccer, track and field, and other fun activities and events. With all these actives available for the community to enjoy, Ga-Ga ball would be a great extension to Lake Waterford's ever growing list of  recreation.

Where will the money go?

All the money raised will go into the materials needed to complete the Ga-Gall ball pit project. Such materials include the lumber, fasteners, brackets, mulch, screws, weed blocker, handicap-accessible gate, and signage. If there was to be any left over funds that were not used in my project, they would be donated to the adaptive sports program at Lake Waterford Park.

Adaptive Sports
The entrance of the Ga-Ga ball pit will have a handicap accessible gate. This gate would allow everyone to experience the fun of in Ga-Ga ball. Lake Waterford has many different adaptive sports that are available through programs held at the park. By working with the park ranger, we plan to introduce these adaptive athletes and their families to a new game, Ga-Ga ball.

Thank you for all your support and I can't wait to start building.
