Jackie's Dilley Pro-Bono Project
Donation protected
My name is Jackie; I am a bilingual paralegal for an immigration law firm in Boulder, Colorado, soon to be pursuing my law degree. I will be traveling to Dilley, Texas, the last week of August to volunteer at the all-women family detention center. As many of you know, the vast majority of families detained are fleeing extreme violence, poverty, and persecution in Central America and elsewhere and are seeking asylum here in the United States. Without the help of organizations like CARA, Dilley Pro-Bono project, and volunteers, these families would go without legal support, putting them in danger.
The program works in a weekly cycle where lawyers, law students, paralegals, and volunteers provide any and all legal support needed for a week, 12-15 hours a day. Once the week is over, the next set of volunteers take over. My duties will include providing legal research regarding country conditions and court rulings, providing intakes for families, CFI preparation for families, legal advice regarding required steps to be taken once released, and drafting declarations/affidavits.
CARA consists of Catholic Legal Immigration Network, the American Immigration Council, the Refugee, and Immigrant Center for Education and Legal Services, and the American Immigration Lawyers Association. These organizations are dedicated to providing justice by giving free and low-cost legal services to immigrant children, families, and refugees.
I had the pleasure of volunteering in Karnes, Texas, at the all-male detention center last December. I’m eager to return and provide any support and be of service to vulnerable women and their children who find themselves behind bars. All human beings are born free and equal. Everyone has the right to live, to be free, and to feel safe. These families have suffered an enormous amount of trauma that no one should ever have to endure. Time is of the essence; our support is vital to their survival. When one of us suffers, we all suffer.
If you feel called to do so, please consider making a donation for my trip to Dilley, Texas. Your kind donation will fund my plane ticket from Denver to San Antonio, a rental car to drive two hours to the detention facility, pay for food and hotel for a week. Any money raised over my needs will be donated to CARA and Dilley Pro-Bono Project.
Thank you kindly for considering!
