Let us tell you a little about Quesnel Lake! Friendly helpful neighbours, lovely communities, an abundance of wildlife; Home to BC’s largest Gerard rainbow trout, salmon live in the shallow bays for 2 years until they are big enough to take on the Fraser River!
Quesnel Lake is unique, It’s a paradise! A paradise for all British Columbians.
We were devastated on the morning of August 4, 2014, when the dam at the Mount Polley Mine site failed and released billions of litres of mine waste water into Quesnel Lake. Canada’s largest environmental mining catastrophe.
Despair turned to anger for us and many of our friends and neighbours, when the B.C. Government issued a permit to build a pipeline to discharge mine waste water directly into the lake, allowing the ongoing pollution of Quesnel Lake.
We filed an appeal of the pipeline permit with BC Environmental Appeal Board and a hearing. However, we were forced once again to delay our appeal because Mount Polley Mine submitted additional applications for changes to its permits and due to the global pandemic. This means we now need to wait until the Ministry of Environment decides on the changes. It also means thousands of additional dollars for us, ordinary citizens, to continue with the appeal.
Nearly seven years after this massive failure, we are concerned about the lack of proper law enforcement.
It leaves us with more uncertainties for the future.
We want to stop pollution to Quesnel Lake, and we want to make sure a bad precedent is not set for other mines to dump their untreated waste water into any lake.
YOUR DONATIONS WILL BE USED TO SUPPORT OUR LEGAL/ EXPERT COSTS INCURRED TO FIGHT THIS PIPELINE AT BC'S ENVIRONMENTAL APPEAL BOARD.
