Trees for Boruca

Donation protected

La Asociacion de So Cagru (Las Mujeres Indigenas de Boruca) are an indigenous peoples’ group from Boruca, Buenos Aires, Costa Rica.  The Boruca People are famous for their elaborate masks and textiles and are decedents of the Diquis Culture, makers of the world-renown stone spheres of southwestern Costa Rica.  La Asociación de So Cagru are led by Lourdes Fraser Rojas, the matriarch of La Asociacion de So Cagru, who has established a vision for the Boruca People to restore their lands to their original nature complete with birds, monkeys, native wildlife, native forests and trees of cultural significance.

Boruca provides a unique opportunity to conduct a project that has many direct and indirect benefits.  These benefits are surprisingly diverse and include providing work opportunities in one of the most impoverished communities in Costa Rica, increasing the water supply during the dry season, providing expanded opportunities for tourism, expanding the presence of culturally significant resources, and off setting climate change.

Trees for Boruca plans to plant 15,000 native forest trees on 13.5 hectares (33.75 acres) of open and fallow field.  The total cost to grow, transport, plant and maintain the trees for one year is USD$45,000 or approximately 26,268,613.50 Costa Rican Colones.  This is USD$3/tree.
