Reasons Why We Started Irvine Ask For Masks:
Just this past week, my younger brother and I, shopped at a local food retailer for baking supplies. During our visit, we noticed a number of other customers, particularly seniors, lacking any sort of facial protection. One senior even came up to us and asked where we got our mask because they weren't able to obtain one. This enlightened us to research and educate ourselves on the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic as well as discuss what he and I could do for our community.
Who We Are:
We are two brothers who live in Irvine, California looking for ways to help our community during this pandemic. Brendan is a sophomore at Woodbridge High School and Calen is an eighth-grader in Lakeside Middle School.
Situation:
As of April 6th, the Orange County Health Authority reported 882 positive cases of COVID-19 to date. Our City of Irvine tied for second in the County for the highest number confirmed cases with 77. To assist in reducing the potential for community transmission, Governor Newsom issued a Stay at Home Order on March 19th, which limits business operations and social gatherings.
What We Are Doing:
We are working on acquiring non-surgical masks from different sources and we are planning to distribute them to the seniors in our community during their designated shopping hours.
What We Hope To Happen:
Through preventive measures, we hope to reduce the number of people infected by COVID-19 and minimize the number of patients requiring hospitalization. What happens over the coming weeks will determine whether the experience in Irvine resembles that of New York City, which has seen an explosion of hospitalizations and deaths, or like that of the San Francisco Bay Area, which has so far managed to prevent a major spike in new infections, hospitalizations, and death.
What You Can Do:
We recommend a donation of $25 (which can help approximately 5 seniors to obtain a non-medical mask) but any amount is greatly appreciated. Our hope is that this will allow seniors and those with serious health conditions some degree of protection while they are shopping for groceries or filling prescriptions to maintain their overall health. However, there are a number of ways you can help us in assisting our wonderful community!
- Donate cloth or other non-medical grade masks for us to distribute
- Share our stories to your friends and families
Should our initial project be successful, we will also consider distributing masks to residential senior living communities in the area.
Thank you for your generosity and consideration for the well-being of others.
