This October, I’ll be taking on a full IRONMAN in Portugal — a 3.8km swim, 180km cycle, and a full marathon… all in one day. It’s the biggest physical challenge I’ve ever taken on, but it’s nothing compared to what my Nana and my Granny face every single day.
Both of these incredible women are living with dementia. And while it’s hard to describe just how deeply this illness impacts them — and us as a family — I can say this: dementia is slow, and it’s quiet, but it changes everything.
There are days when they don’t quite remember who we are, or where they are. There are moments of confusion, frustration, and sadness. But there are also moments of light — little glimpses of recognition, of love, of who they still are underneath it all. And those moments mean everything.
I’m doing this IRONMAN to honour them. To carry their strength, their stories, and their love with me through every kilometre. And I’m using this race to raise funds for the Alzheimer’s society of Ireland, a charity that does such important work supporting families like mine — offering care, information, and hope in the face of a difficult journey.
The Alzheimer Society of Ireland works across the country in the heart of local communities providing dementia specific services and supports and advocating for the rights and needs of all people living with dementia and their carers
If you’re able to donate, even a small amount, it would mean the world. Every bit helps, and every euro goes directly to supporting those living with dementia and their loved ones.
And if you can’t donate, sharing this story or simply holding my Nana and Granny in your thoughts is more than enough.
Thanks,
