The Issue -
Ireland has one of the strictest abortion laws among developed countries. There have been no changes since the early '80s, when the Eighth Amendment to Ireland’s Constitution was passed, to allow abortion only where the mother’s life is at risk. No other reason is allowed.
It was a highly contentious issue then, and it will have the same polarizing effect when the Irish people go to a referendum on May 25th, to decide whether or not to repeal the amendment. Feelings on both sides of the question are fierce, and neither side trusts the other to “play fair”.
Who We Are & What We're Doing -
SDAI-ADID is a small Canadian-based NGO interested in supporting and strengthening democracy through election observation. We are sending an international election observation team to Ireland to observe whether or not the two sides do "play fair", and that the electoral process adheres to international standards of free, fair and transparent elections.
What We'll Do With the Money -
Our observers are committed volunteers, and they will be paying much of the costs themselves. They will work in teams of two, in order to ensure that impartial eyes are present at this important vote.
SDAI-AIDD urgently needs funds, as soon as possible, to support the observers on the ground in Ireland. Funds raised will be used to pay for trainings and briefings by in-country experts on the issue, training and briefing materials for the observers, overnight costs for observers, and transportation costs to move about the country as they observe activities in the polling stations.
How Your Donation Helps -
Your support is critical to this mission, and will have an enormous impact on the quality of the observation and its resulting reports to Irish electoral bodies and stakeholderson both sides of the issue.
Your donation will help provide the means to observe throughout the country and to provide in-depth information, delivered by experts on the issue, to prepare our observers in the field to perform their tasks knowledgeably and professionally.
