Inveraray Pier Fund

The pier in Inveraray has been privately owned for over 20 years and in the past 8 years it has been closed to the public. The Inveraray community now has the opportunity to bring it back into community ownership. To do this we need to purchase the pier from the current owner and carry out remedial works to allow the public to enjoy this famous landmark once again.

History
The original modest 100ft pier was originally built in 1762 for a fee of ten-and-sixpence. The extension to the pier was the towns own responsibility, history repeating itself. It only provided anchorage for two small boats, which did not serve the booming herring fleet of 500 local boats and at least 100 others. The town applied for a grant in 1796 but since nothing in Inveraray seemed to be achieved in a hurry, was not granted until 1800 for a sum of £200, leaving the remaining £435 to be raised by the magistrates, and eventually being built in 1806. To reclaim expenses accrued, any vessel paid a burgess ticket of two and a half guineas.
The pier was extended again in 1836 at a cost of £1200 and is now a category B building. The pier has been privately owned for over 20 years and in the past 8 years has been closed to the public due to previous and current owner being unable to afford the required restoration. The owner has approached Inspire Inveraray, a local registered charity, and Inveraray Community Council to purchase the pier as a community asset, benefiting the local community and economy, ensuring that it never closes again to the public and booming number of tourists visiting the historical town.
The pier lies on the popular Loch Fyne and in current condition, being closed to the public offers little opportunity for the boating community to use its facilities and access the town with its popular tourist attractions, shops, and eateries. There is no facilities for keen fisherman, paddleboarders or water adventurers to easily access the loch.
Objective
Purchase and re-development of Inveraray Pier to benefit the community and the local economy by Inspire Inveraray, with the partnership of Inveraray Community Council.
Raise purchase and restoration funds through grant applications, go fund me and fund raising.
Aims
To regenerate the pier as part of a tourist town with lots of visitors, befitting local businesses.
To regenerate the pier for locals to use for leisure and accessing water sports and fishing activities.
To offer opportunities to local businesses and budding entrepreneurs to use the pier for activities such as water sports, fishing, seafood shacks, boat tours etc.
To offer the opportunity for investment for example in moorings, pontoons, and slipways.
To offer the opportunity to increase use of the pier from yachts, small cruisers, and the navy.
To include involvement from other like-minded parties such as Historical Scotland and Clyde Marine Planning Partnership.
To connect surrounding towns of the Loch such as Dunoon, Lochgilphead, Cairndow, Strachur and many more. Piers are uniquely valued across all ages and social groups. It just takes outreach. More landing facilities in Argyll will create a better economy.
To be fully accessible, flat, free, and open to everyone.
To improve the biodiversity in the Loch, which can be used by schools to develop children’s education, introducing them to the marine environment.
