Our names are Liv & Nika and we are organizing a community run club on Sunday March 8th to celebrate International Women’s Day. We are hosting this event in collaboration with Kits Beach Coffee and also using it as an opportunity to fundraise feminine hygiene products for the YWCA of Vancouver.
Women have come leaps and bounds (literally) in the world of running since Kathrine Switzer became the first woman to officially run the Boston Marathon in 1967. We are hoping to continue to empower women in sport, encourage collective action through community building, celebrate Canadian women-owned businesses, and spread awareness about women’s health and Period Poverty.
“Period Poverty" is the global, systemic inability to access or afford safe menstrual products, proper sanitation, and education. Affecting roughly 1 in 6 Canadians, it causes significant health risks, mental distress, and missed school or work. It is driven by high costs (inflation), stigma, lack of infrastructure, and, historically, taxing products as luxury items.
All donations will go towards purchasing the following items for women and families in need: menstrual products (pads, tampons, liners, menstrual cups), hygiene & toiletries (shampoo, conditioner, body wash, lotion, soap), feminine wipes, new underwear, toothpaste, and dental care.
Help us improve access to resources and break down barriers for women and girls so they can continue to achieve their goals and strive for greatness!
Liv & Nika
