When Dreams Are Derailed by the Unexpected — A Personal Appeal
Over the years, I’ve had the honour of mentoring many international students each with their own story of courage, sacrifice, and quiet determination. One of them, a bright, hardworking recent Master’s graduate in IT, is now fighting an unexpected and heartbreaking battle.
On Thursday, 5 June 2025, he suffered a heart attack.
He’s young. Full of promise. And yet, he found himself in an emergency room, undergoing surgery for two stents. Another procedure is still ahead.
Like many international students, he came to Australia with dreams in his backpack and very little else. What he didn’t come with, and what most students don’t have, is a safety net for medical emergencies. The system often leaves them in limbo during moments like this: vulnerable, scared, and financially overwhelmed.
I don’t share this lightly. And I’m cautious even now, out of respect for his and his family’s privacy. But as someone who has walked alongside him in this journey, I feel a deep sense of responsibility, and hope.
We’ve set up a fundraiser to help with his hospital and recovery expenses. If you’re in a position to contribute, or even to share this post, it would mean the world, not just to him, but to every international student who dares to believe in a better future.
Let’s remind those far from home that compassion knows no borders.
Let’s show them that in their moment of need, they are not alone.
With gratitude,
Mohan Ganavarapu
