Making an Impact Half a World Away- Rwanda 2019
They say Seeing is Believing, but with the Western University Rwanda Community Engaged Learning Course, we believe in its next step: Doing is Achieving.
For five weeks from May 19th to June 22nd, 2019, twelve Western University student leaders and one globally-recognized professor will travel to Kigali, Rwanda to work alongside local NGOs to make a direct impact in the area.
Our Goal: To make an impact half a world away, in an area that needs it most.
This isn't about building schools that aren't needed. This isn't about blind donations where impact isn't tracked. This isn't ‘voluntourism.’ In fact, this won't be easy.
It is only by learning about a country ravaged 25 years ago by genocide, and becoming involved with the groups on the ground that are building it to become a model country for development, that we are able to truly make an impact that is sustainable, realistic and achievable.
For this, we need your help: All of the money that we raise will be going directly to our community partners, who know how the money can be spent most effectively. Every donation, big and small, will make a world of difference for for our three partners and all the people that they help on a daily basis.
Be a part of the 2019 Rwandan story, and together we can make an impact half a world away.
Below is more information about our three community partners, and the work that your donations will support:
Centre Marembo:
Centre Marembo works to provide rehabilitation services to young girls who have been the victims of sexual and domestic abuse. The Center currently houses thirty-eight children in one of their two housing units and provides them with all of their basic needs including education and vocational skills training. You can visit them at: http://www.centremarembo.org/
Les Enfants De Dieu:
Les Enfants De Dieu is an intellectual rehabilitation centre for former street boys. At present, the center houses 120 former street boys between the ages of 7-18 and strives to provide them with the best possible access to educational, recreational and rehabilitative services. You can visit them at: http://enfantsdedieu.org/
Aspire Rwanda:
Aspire provides resilient, hard-working women and the youth with skills and confidence to make their own choices, become self-sufficient, and take control of their lives. Aspire Rwanda offers a variety of programs to empower women and the youth: vocational skills training, business skills training, micro-credit loans, agricultural support (for participants living in rural areas) and a robust social empowerment and health education program. With new skills, knowledge and confidence, our participants are able to secure jobs, start their own businesses or expand their businesses. In doing so, they acquire a steady source of income improving their quality of life. You can visit them at: http://www.aspirerwanda.org
