Indigenous Editors' Association

(Please contact us  if you would prefer to donate via e-transfer.) The Indigenous Editors' Association (IEA) is launching this fundraiser to contribute to costs of a strategic planning gathering February 7-9, 2020 for a total of 10 volunteers. This gathering (not to be confused with our semi-annual broader event, known as the Indigenous Editors' Circle) will be the first--but not the last--opportunity for our very busy volunteers to gather together and set aside dedicated time and space for our work. We have found that our team works well long-distance, but urgently needs an opportunity to gather in one room if we are to create a solid, sustainable foundation for our future activities, including our next Circle. This gathering will help us to consolidate our shared knowledge of the history of the IEA and our creative ideas for the future. We will share skills, build our network and team, implement a diversity of funding plans and create a detailed work plan. Who benefits: This gathering will benefit not only the volunteers and the Indigenous members of the IEA but the entire publishing industry, which finds itself in increasing need of the special insights and skills of Indigenous editors, knowledge keepers, language experts, peer reviewers, publishing professionals, and other service providers. Our Association is best positioned to help Indigenous publishing service providers address these needs on our own terms, thanks to years of work by previous Indigenous volunteers to build a network and shared vision. Proceeds from this fundraiser will be used to cover or contribute to: - An honorarium and gift to recognize the participation of a local Elder  - Travel and accommodation expenses for a small number of Indigenous volunteers (specifically transit costs, hotel costs, and per diems; so far, confirmed travellers are covering their own flight costs) - Hospitality expenses (food) - Accessibility accommodations - Childcare If we raise enough funds to cover all of these goals, excess funds will be used toward fees of a trained and experienced Indigenous facilitator, or will be set aside for honorariums, travel, accommodation, hospitality, and accessibility costs of the next Indigenous Editors' Circle.  We have set a deadline of JANUARY 15th, 2020 to ensure we have time to book appropriate accommodation, but we will continue to accept funds after this date.  We know there is a consistent and reliable community that supports this work. We have received 10 letters from publishers and organizations in support of this strategic planning gathering and our plan to create a database of Indigenous editors. Our supporters have asked us for an opportunity to donate. We believe this is because they, like us, want to honour the dreams of previous volunteers and Circle faculty by creating a comprehensive and sustainable plan for our future, including logistics for our next Circle. Background: The Indigenous Editors' Association (www.indigenouseditorsassociation.ca) was formed after the 2017 Indigenous Editors' Circle. Our vision is of a publishing community where projects by, for, and about Indigenous Peoples and people are Indigenous-led, benefit Indigenous communities, follow appropriate protocols, and respect Indigenous Traditional Knowledge and Intellectual Property rights. Our primary purpose is to provide a central space for Indigenous storytelling, editing, and publishing communities, realized in the semi-annual Indigenous Editors' Circle.
