Introducing the Indie Skate-Curators Fund (Round 1)
Launched on December 27th, 2023
"Let's face it: the world is sick with issues.
I'm offering a solution. It's "Culture As The Cure".
One thing we know is when people come together to celebrate their culture, communities become connected and opportunities for collaboration, for collective economics, for conversation, for reconciliation, for support also appear.
Once you understand that unity is a temporary state that may be created as well as dissolved, you see how powerful it is to bring people together through enjoying shared culture. Once united we may address pressing issues in real-time.
And this is at the HEART of what we NEED to heal our society.
The "Indie Skate Curators Fund" empowers local skate creators as Ambassadors of Culture who will produce exhibitions, events and experiences under the mission of the African-American Roller-Skate Museum, creating moments for unity in their communities across, and over-the-seas of the United States (Puerto Rico & Hawaii).
By mixing skate culture with fashion, art, music and dance--Skate Curators will create programming that extend the spectrum of audiences who can relate and enjoy the wonders that roller-skating has to offer.
Beginning in 2024, as the fund grows and money becomes available, the African-American Roller-Skate Museum will disperse $5k awards to skaters living in the USA who submit winning proposals.
They will use the funds and receive guidance to produce free and public programming in their local region as an independent ambassador of the AARSM.
With these activations, we will be bringing communities together, uniting them and opening the doors for us to explore greater solutions to the problems we face.
Let's raise $500, 10% of the first award by Dec 31st!**
**Please note, to keep the Museum's operations sustainable, 50% of money raised will go to off-set operation costs, including the expenses related to fundraising, managing the Indie Skate Curators Fund and fees for using this platform!
I work as an artist, researcher and creative strategist, hailing from Southeast Jamaica, Queens, New York, now living in East Harlem.
I am the Founding Director of the African-American Roller-Skate Museum, a decentralized institution in the making.
Check out the pilot programs I've successfully run already below.
Here are some highlights from April 2021-July 2023.
It all started with me creating NYC Roller-Skating Week in April 2021.
I hosted 16 free skate lectures, panels, skate lessons after receiving a 8-day space donation from the Showfields clothing store in NoHo, Manhattan
I worked with commercial brands to pair skaters with paid influencer opportunities
I produced and directed a pilot dance theatre performance of "The Wiz on Roller-Skates" with a cast of 9-skaters in 3-weeks
I partnered with Google Pixel to host a rink-takeover promotional videoshoot and to synthesize research about black skate history for a media campaign
I curated a roller-skate photography exhibition by African-American women and hosted the show opening in a metaverse gallery
I created the Mobile Museum Xperience and a team of two skate educators along with myself presented it to a group of teens at a Brooklyn school
- I painted multiple roller-skate murals in Harlem
- My two teen sons and I hosted free, weekly roller-skate sessions with free rentals and safety gear available to all ages
- I enrolled in a User Experience/User Interface Design tech bootcamp, conducted research and designed a roller-skate mobile app prototype that helps skaters manage all aspects of their skate life in one place
I thank each and every one of you for taking the time to read this. Your contributions matter!
Stay tuned for more updates as I continue on my quest.
