There is a crisis quietly unfolding in Virginia. Less than 2% of licensed childcare providers are equipped to serve children with disabilities. Every day, families are being pushed out of the workforce, children are being turned away, and parents are left to navigate a system that was never built for their child. I know this struggle intimately, not just as a special education teacher, but as the mother of an 8-year-old nonverbal son with autism. I have made the phone calls that go nowhere, left jobs because care didn’t exist, and sat in parking lots feeling the weight of exhaustion and heartbreak. I have fought for my child and for my students, and I know I am not alone.
That’s why I am launching Spectrum of Light Childcare Center in Chesterfield, Virginia. This center is more than a business, it is a response to a real and urgent need. Spectrum of Light will offer full-day, inclusive childcare for infants through school-age children, with extended hours and Saturday care. Our classrooms will be equipped with adaptive furniture, sensory tools, and regulation supplies. We will provide adaptive transportation safety seats, and our staff will receive specialized training to support every child’s unique needs. Every dollar raised will go directly toward building a space where children with disabilities are not just accepted, but celebrated.
Every dollar raised goes directly toward opening these doors. Here is exactly what your contribution builds: Your support could provide a weighted lap pad or sensory fidget tool for a child's calm-down corner, a complete set of visual schedule boards for a classroom, a full child safety kit, a day of specialized staff training, adaptive chairs or flexible seating, a communication toolkit for nonverbal children, adaptive safety harnesses for transportation, infant equipment, classroom sets of adaptive furniture, or even cover licensing and inspection fees. Each gift, no matter the size, helps create a place where every child is seen, supported, and safe.
If you are a parent who has felt unseen, I want you to know you are not alone. If you are a supporter, your contribution, no matter the amount, will help build a place where every child is seen, supported, and safe. Please join me in making this vision a reality. Together, we can change the story for families like mine, and for so many others who are still searching for hope.
