In Remembrance of Sarah Pitts

Over the past few days, many of us have gathered collectively to share stories and celebrate the memory of Sarah Pitts. We’ve been struck by the outpouring of messages, photos, words and experiences that have been shared.

She had a natural gift for communicating and connecting with those around her; finding the best in people, taking experiences as they come, and being present. She was magnetic and her enthusiasm and passion for the causes she believed in was contagious and inspiring.  

It's tough to put into words the impact she had, and will continue to have. She was a force, whether influencing progressive policy within the Brooklyn District Attorney's office,  conducting naloxone training, protecting protestors at marches and actions, or organizing community workshops aimed at creating a more accessible and inclusive bike culture. She relentlessly showed up in support the values groups and communities that she believed in.

Sarah Pitts was a world class human and her passing is a tremendous loss for this community and all the people she whose lives she would have touched. 

We’ve put together a list of causes that Sarah expressed were close to her heart. If you’d like to help fulfill any of Sarah’s wishes you can specify a specific cause or we can distribute the funds on your behalf. 

Funds will be distributed to the following causes in this order. 25% will go to the GOTV fund (option #1) , the rest will go toward the Sarah Pitts Memorial Bike Collective. If you want to direct your donation to one of the following causes please let us know and we will allocate accordingly.

1) Voter Registration and Get Out The Vote in Philadelphia, PA. Sarah was immensely passionate about inspiring anyone that would listen to travel with her to Philly to register voters and canvas the city ensuring they vote come November. These funds will be used to subsidize travel to and from NYC to PA, lodging and food during weekend canvassing for those that are able to volunteer and fulfill her last wishes. 

2) The Sarah Pitts Memorial Bike Collective: Sarah helped co-found, co-fund and faithfully organize this space.  The workshop encourages diversity within the cycling community and seeks to empower poc, women and the LGBTQ communities through education classes and subsidized bikes for those in need. Donations will be spent on bike stands, lights, repairs and replacement parts and other consumables such as tubes, tires and supplies as needed. Donations will also facilitate future workshops and special case subsidized bike donations for people-in-need.
