In Memory of Jenny Jo Hartney: Support for Her Family

Donazione protetta
Jenny Jo Hartney, Class of 2002 and wife of Rich Hartney, Class of 2000, passed away peacefully with family by her side on October 29, 2024, as her nearly 10-year battle with cancer came to an end.

Jen grew up in Chicago where she was an accomplished swimmer and water polo player and dreamed of one day joining the FBI. She attended New Mexico Military Institute for one year before heading to West Point where she was a member of the Parachute Team, graduated from Navy Dive school, was active in Officer’s Christian Fellowship and was a beloved YoungLife leader. Jen branched Corps of Engineers and served in the 1st Cav Division’s Engineer Brigade, deploying to Iraq during OIF II in 2004-2005.

Jen lived with intention. Though thriving in her Army career, she chose to hang up her uniform and devote her exceptional talents and energies to raising her children and creating a home for her growing family. She fostered deep relationships and community at Fort Rucker, AL, West Point, NY, El Paso, TX and finally in Chesapeake, VA, where her
husband retired from the military after 20 years.

While living in Virginia, Jen’s dream of becoming a special agent with the FBI became a reality when she graduated as top honor graduate in September 2019 and delivered the commencement address. She was fiercely dedicated to the mission while working on the Joint Terrorism Task Force. At varying times in her life she was a homeschool mom, an active church member, small business owner, youth swim and water polo coach, leadership consultant, and YoungLife leader.

Jen was best known for her incredible strength, character and faith, her indomitable grit, her unwavering devotion to friends and neighbors, and her deep love for her husband and children.

Jen is survived by her husband of 22 years, Rich, their son Reagan and their daughters Vera, Ada, Téa and Raleigh. During this heartbreaking time of loss, the Class of 2000 and the Classmates of Jen Jo have established a fund for classmates and friends to pay honor to Jen and help Rich and their children with the unexpected costs of her passing.

At the time of passing, all West Point graduates receive a tribute page where family, colleagues and classmates can share thoughts and memories which bring comfort to the family. We encourage you to leave a message or story on Jen's Be Thou At Peace page, here:
