I am sharing the most devastating news I could ever imagine. My beloved childhood best friend of almost 30 years, Billie Annabelle Young, mother of two beautiful girls, Ayana Belle and Vibishan Vishnu, daughter, cherished sister, and adored friend to so many, as well as a valued member of our beautiful Santa Cruz community — tragically lost her life on her 35th birthday.

Billie is a Santa Cruz legend. Working in homeless services and harm reduction for over 15 years, she had the purest soul and a heart of gold, and she genuinely wanted to make a positive impact in our community. So many know her for her impeccable taste in music, iconic sense of fashion, epic sense of humor, and ability to connect with and truly love every individual who was lucky enough to cross paths with her in this lifetime.

But most of all, Billie was a beautiful, selfless mother to her girls. They were her world, and we want to do everything possible to make sure the girls and their families have everything they need and more while navigating this deeply tragic loss. Billie gave her life to helping others, and we will be holding a celebration of her life for the many people who knew and loved her as soon as possible. I know how hard this loss will hit our community, and we appreciate privacy for the family while we grieve this unimaginable loss.
