On August 5th, 2025, unexpectedly at the age of 44, Matt Costa was called to his eternal home. Matt was a devoted husband to Katie, an amazing father to Tyler, a beloved son to Christine and Michael, and known as coach to many in the Elk Grove community.

Matt touched countless lives and will always be remembered for his warmth, humor, and selfless heart. Matt loved his family unconditionally, his dogs, and all sports, especially the Elk Grove High School Thundering Herd, where he coached for almost 15 years. Matt was a shining light in the lives of everyone who had the privilege of knowing him and had the ability to bring laughter into any room. Whether it was his family, friends, players he coached, or anyone lucky to have crossed paths with him, Matt gave you his heart completely.

As a parent and coach, Matt didn't just teach the game, he shaped lives. His influence extended far beyond the football field, instilling confidence, discipline, and kindness in every player he mentored. While he achieved much in life and career, Matt would define his legacy by the love he had for Katie, Tyler, his entire family, and all the meaningful relationships he nurtured.

Though his physical presence is no longer with us, Matt's spirit will continue to inspire and uplift all who knew him. May we honor his legacy by living with the same love, compassion, and humor that he so generously shared.

With Matt's unexpected passing, the Costa family is still in disbelief. For those of you who know Katie, know she is one of the most selfless, kindest, strongest, and resilient humans we all know. We are hoping to raise money to help support Katie and Tyler with any unforeseen expenses they may encounter in the future. Katie would also like to extend her heartfelt gratitude to all those who have reached out to express their love and support during this difficult time. We ask that you continue to keep Katie, Tyler, and the entire Costa family in your thoughts and prayers.

A Celebration of Life service will be held on Sunday, September 7th, 2025, at 6:00 PM at the Elk Grove High School Thundering Herd Football Stadium - 9800 Elk Grove Florin Road, Elk Grove, California 95624.
