In 1990, South Yemen and North Yemen joined together after many years of fighting - due to differing beliefs in how their countries should be run. Since joining, however, the fighting has not stopped and has escalated to a civil war. This civil war is still ongoing and has caused what is said to be the “worst humanitarian crisis in the last 100 years.”
3.6 million people have been forced to leave their homes, 70% of the entire population lacks access to healthcare, food, or safe water, and disease is rampant across the region. Yemen has been fighting deadly outbreaks of cholera in recent years. Amid the fears of the spread of coronavirus, the healthcare infrastructure is struggling to handle another public health crisis.
IRUSA is a leading humanitarian organization that has been delivering life-saving aid in almost all Yemeni provinces. Through the support of generous humanitarians and donors, health supplies and resources are being boosted; urgent food aid is being sent; and clean water and sanitation systems are being put into place.
