3 students, in their KISC house shirts, look at the site of the future playground expansion
Kathmandu International Study Centre (KISC) is a vibrant international school tucked in the foothills of Nepal’s capital city. More than 200 children from 20-plus countries study from classes K to 12. Perhaps you are reading this because you know and love some of these students. Here, they not only receive a great education but also find a sense of community as they develop friendships with other kids who are often living outside of their native culture. Will you help us improve the space they play in by giving today?
Some of the many kids getting excited about the improvements!
Sadly, the few playgrounds that exist in Kathmandu are mostly broken down and dangerous. The KISC school playground is well-loved by the students and also serves as a place of education and opportunity for physical activity and occupational therapy.
The limited playground equipment here is heavily utilized.
For example, the following climbing frame built more than 30 years ago, has been played on by generations of children who have imagined it as their chimney for hanging stockings, a clubhouse, monkey bars, a store, a gymnastics frame, a spaceship, and hundreds of other real and make-believe scenarios. It’s hard even to measure how much learning has happened through play on that structure!
Alumni and current students "hanging out" on the frame built in 1988!
The KISC PTA is spearheading an effort to enhance our playground. Will you help us by giving and getting the word out? With your support, students will be able to enjoy an epic new swing, an outdoor play kitchen, three different balance beam challenges, and a bouldering wall.
If you are interested in helping fund this needed project, see the itemized costs below as a guide for your giving.
GIVE TO FUND A SWING
Help build a pendulum spider swing that will cater to kids of all ages. It will also be large enough to meet some student occupational therapy needs.
- $500 to custom build the large seat
- $300 to level the ground of the swing’s site
- $100 swivel hardware
- $100 concrete bases
- $32 / foot of metal for the swing frame
- $25 / chain
DONATE TO BUILD 3 BALANCE BEAMS
Inspiration for variation in balance beams to offer an additional challenge!
There will be 3 different beams that will be used both recreationally and by the Student Support department for therapy; a zig-zag beam, a straight and narrow beam, and a beam installed at a slope.
- $100 for the concrete bases
- $80 for adding grip and sealant to the beams
- $32/foot of metal beam
HELP FUND A BOULDERING WALL
Inspiration for our bouldering wall
We plan to partner with local climbing wall experts to develop a bouldering wall that will be suitable for both play and also include routes for students who want to explore competitive climbing.
- $460 / panel of concrete wallboard
- $300 / mats
- $ 200 / paint
- $5-40 / climbing hold (we need 360!)
GIVE TO BUILD A MUD KITCHEN
This little kitchen will be for our younger students from the primary grades. It will be used for both play and outdoor learning lessons.
- $250 / wood fame
- $200 / awning
- $50 / sealant
- $40 / sink & faucet

Some of the kids who hope to do some "cooking and baking" in a new play kitchen
After you donate, there is an option to submit a comment and share who or what inspired you to give! We will share your info with the children. Thank you for helping us! We are looking forward to sending you updates about the project and messages from the kids! The students at KISC are so grateful for their family and friends, both those here and around the world!
Thank you! We will close this campaign at the end of January and hope to send you pictures of the amazing progress on this project!
