Immediate Housing for an expecting family of 5

peace! I’m Nev, a JC native and organizer with BMU (Build More Unity). This community request is for my brother, his partner who is 9 months expecting, my god daughter, and her older sister who are choosing to remain unnamed publicly.

BACK STORY:

On December 27th, they were evicted (padlocked) out of their apartment. TRA (Temporary Rental Assistance) was secured for 24th months previously and expired October of 2023 which brought the two-bedroom rent up to full market rate. With children, and unable to find stable, reliable, and compatible work, the family struggled to meet the new rent costs and were subsequently evicted. They have moved their stationary belongings to a storage unit.

A few days before being evicted, dad went to Garden State Episcopal (Housing Services located in Hudson Gardens) and was told that they’d have to return when they were basically out on the street. Which they did, and were told that being “the end of the year, funds are depleted, shelters are at capacity, they cannot provide stable assistance at this time.” Representatives there provided a one night voucher for a nearby hotel and informed Dad that if the situation was not figured out soon their office would be obligated to call

New Jersey Division of Child Protection and Permanency (DCPP).

This Gofundme is a community request to help this family secure funding for housing & immediate needs for 90 days to get back on their feet, and for mom to be stable approaching her due date in January.

IMMEDIATE NEEDS: resources for rent-controlled housing, affordable apartments in the hudson county area, (nearby Essex is okay too)

Pampers/wipes/milk/eczema cream/laundry detergent, food (prepared meals, groceries (once in a space with a kitchen) , gas cards

Dad drives an older vehicle and does Uber Eats to meet some of their basic needs, he is seeking opportunities for permanent employment.

Update:

Thanks to community support, enough funds have been raised to search for a two-bedroom apartment. Tap in if you have leads/info! Dad has been applying, while mom has been leaving voicemails on the social service offices that have been coming in as recommendations. (Most offices are closed until after Jan. 1st)

The plan is to stay at the hotel until further assistance can be provided. As of today (30th) payment still needs to be made to secure stay for the 31st, 1st at $125 a night. Dad is doing Uber Eats to add to the support that is coming through alternative payments ($spiff328) to meet the needs of hotel costs, food, and gas and baby needs.

Donations for the babies are beginning to come in, and are still needed!
