IMAGINE… WHAT COULD COMMUNITY SAFETY LOOK LIKE IN CHICAGO?

This campaign aims to get Chicagons involved in thinking about what alternatives to policing could look like in their communities.

We will host an Action Day where we invite Chicagoans to engage in conversations around what safety and security beyond policing could look like in their communities. We’re calling on local artists to help us communicate these ideas graphically, and will use flypost (aka wheatpaste) to activate the exterior facade of a prominent building in Bronzeville with this art, guerilla marketing style (don’t worry, we will have the property owner’s permission).

To really engage the community in the Action Day, we will host conversations with community organizers, opportunities for folks attending or passing by to share their experiences and provide input, and of course, refreshments and music. All of this in the name of catalyzing efforts to re-allocate how we invest in the safety and security of our communities.

Turns out, there is some cost associated with this event. We need your help raising the funds to purchase materials for wheatpasting (mops, sponges, brushes, flour, paint trays, etc..), printing and plotting the artwork, and providing a safe participant environment at the outdoor site. We aim to raise this amount in thirty days.

Any funds we raise in excess of what we actually use will go to E.G. Woode, an incubator for minority business owners that leverages the power of real estate to grow their businesses, thereby harnessing the built environment to create economic justice. By supporting the work of E.G. Woode, we are directly investing in an alternative model to create safe communities. Learn more at their website or visit their fundraising campaign  to donate directly to their efforts.

The movement to defund mass incarceration and policing requires investing in alternative models for creating safe and secure communities. This means investing in the basic programs and services our communities need to thrive.

Supporting the Imagine Chicago 2020 Campaign means that together we will #createjustice and #bethechange needed in the US today! Join us on July 5th and follow @imaginechicago2020 on Instagram, Facebook, and @imaginechi2020 on Twitter, as well as at imaginechicago2020.com for updates.
