Help Lucy Conquer the Desert: Support Her Journey and Empower Women Globally! Lucy has been walking the length of the world since 2017 with the ambition of becoming the first woman to achieve this feat.
She believes in equalising the gap between men and women’s achievements, to influence how future generations will revere women. However, her journey has encountered a significant obstacle: The Chihuahuan Desert, Mexico.
Due to delays caused by illness, she is now facing the desert during the scorching summer heat without adequate support. The climate poses severe risks to both her safety and that of her loyal companion, Wombat.
Why It Matters:
This expedition is about more than just a world record attempt. It has become a beacon of inspiration to women in uncharted spaces.
By supporting Lucy, you're not only helping her to achieve her dream, but also paving the way for equality in all walks of life.

Lucy’s Story to Date
Lucy Barnard is an Australian adventurer who, in early 2017, set out to be the first woman to walk the length of the Earth – from Argentina to Alaska.
On 3 March 2023, along with her Chilean-born Australian blue heeler dog, Wombat, Lucy made history as the first woman to walk the length of South America.
In early 2024, she passed the halfway mark in Guatemala, having traveled 15,000 km on foot of the total 30,000 km journey.
So far in her epic adventure, Lucy has:
- Experienced Argentina’s worst snowstorms in 20 years
- Crossed the Atacama Desert in Chile – the driest non-polar desert in the world
- Traversed the Andes Mountains in Peru
- Navigated through the rainforest, mountains, and swamp of the Darién Gap between Colombia and Panama
- Travelled through political red zones and areas of conflict at risk from cartels, guerrillas and gangs
- Faced landslides and avalanches
- Experienced earthquakes
And suffered from:
- Water poisoning Food poisoning
- Footrot
- Abdominal infection
- Intestinal parasites
- Giardia
- Altitude induced heart arrhythmia
- Nutritional anemia
Where is Lucy Now?
Lucy is currently in Mexico, in the state of Guerrero. She’s heading towards the Chihuahuan Desert in the centre of the country, before crossing into the United States.
This summer, walking through the remote Chihuahuan Desert will be Lucy and Wombat’s most severe climate yet – with heatwaves, drought, no communication and potential conflict area risks.
Lucy needs a support vehicle behind her and Wombat to get them across the desert – this would not only enable this part of the adventure to continue but would facilitate the making of a film sponsored by Paddy Pallin about this challenging section of the journey and capture in real time the achievement of, ultimately, the first woman to walk the earth.
The Need
We’re fundraising $50,000 to bring back Bailey and the safety crew for this leg of the journey.
Bailey is an Australian adventurer who has supported Lucy and Wombat throughout parts of the journey to date.
Donating to Lucy and Wombat’s GoFundMe page to bring Bailey back will support two women and a dog who are truly rewriting history.
Having Bailey following Lucy in a van through the Chihuahuan Desert will mean:
- Wombat can hitch a ride whenever he likes (with his sore paws and recent sprained toe)
- Lucy has shade from the sun when she needs it
- All three will be more protected from human interference and climate hazards
- Lucy will get proper sleep in the van, refreshed for the next day’s walk
- The continuation of project communication and social media updates – via Starlink satellite internet
- Lucy can concentrate on walking, while Bailey sorts the daily logistics
How Your Donation Can Help Support Lucy
Here are just some of the items your donation could help purchase:
$50 – a set of heat slippers for Wombat to help protect his feet in the cold night as they heal
$200 – a care package from Australia
$250 – a hydration vest for Lucy $650 – long-range walkie talkies so Lucy and Bailey can communicate
$1,000 – internet installation for the van
$2,000 – petrol and road tolls
$15,000 – campervan hire
We Don’t Have Much Time
Lucy and Wombat are now on the edge of the Chihuahuan Desert, so we need to move quickly so they can continue their momentum on this epic journey and ensure they are adequately prepared.
The alternative is to continue without the support of this crowdfund with the risks this entails.
Please donate now, and be sure to leave an encouraging message to power Lucy on.
