First off, F*CK CANCER!
Back in 2023, I took part in a bike challenge in support of the Children's Cancer Research Fund. When I first posted about it, I mentioned how I’d been quite lucky to not have that much exposure to cancer within my immediate circle. I’ve lost family members, but compared to some, I’ve been blessed that it’s only been a few. How crazy is that? I'm "blessed" to only lose a few family members? C'mon... that's insane, ONE is too many. Seriously, F*CK CANCER!
I spoke about the main inspiration behind my riding being my grandmother – who my wife and I now live with – after she was diagnosed a few years back. Thankfully, she's an absolute warrior and managed to kick that sh*t to the curb. I honestly don't know what I would've done if I lost her. She's my rock and I'm doing my best to appreciate every moment I have with her.
Now, two years later as I take part in a new fundraiser in partnership with the American Cancer Society, I unfortunately have a new inspiration. My uncle, Mark Zela, who is currently in a battle with this terrible disease. He’s one of the most genuine, humble people I know — the very definition of a stand-up man. We don’t see each other often, but he’s always been a role model to me. Even from a distance, his presence has had a lasting impact on who I strive to be.
As part of the challenge – which actually went down in May, but thanks a bike crash a few weeks prior I was unable to participate – I’m cycling 300 miles in June to help bring awareness to the American Cancer Society as they fight for a world without cancer. This ride is for both my grandmother and uncle. For the strength they’ve shown. For the battles they’ve fought. And for everyone else who’s been affected by this disease.
If you’re able to donate, every bit helps.
