IJM unpaid internship

My name is Clement Mutambo, I’m writing to share my story. I’m international student from Zambia studying in Washington, DC at American University pursuing a master’s program in International Peace and Conflict Resolution. I grew up seeing the needs and challenges in Sub Saharan Africa, I am passionate about contributing to the development of peaceful and just societies. I have the honor to be selected for a summer unpaid internship with International Justice Mission (IJM) in Washington DC, for which I am raising support. IJM is a Christian non-profit organization that is comprised of social justice advocates, social workers, criminal investigators and support staff that work to secure justice and proper treatment of the poor and oppressed around the world.


I am a Criminal Intelligence Intern at IJM. My work focuses on human rights abuse and sex trafficking in Southeast Asian Pacific fishing industry. Many island countries in this region are among the leading producers of tuna fish. This fishing industry is marred with labor exploitation and abuse. It is heartbreaking that kids as young as 12 are in bondage on these illegal fishing boats for months, working more than 17 hours a day, sometimes with only a single meal a day and no pay, while the owners make a profit selling to the West. We are confronted with high levels of poverty, greed, and many other social issues which have led to massive sexual and laborer exploitation of defenseless men, women, and children in developing countries.
