My name is Amy, and my husband was detained by ICE on June 5th of this year. After more than three months of fighting, his case was sadly denied in September, and now we are waiting for the day we can finally be reunited. In the meantime, I am left to prepare for one of the hardest seasons of our lives — moving my family to El Salvador to start over together.
My husband came to this country at just 19 years old. From the very beginning, he has always been a super hard worker, slowly building up car by car until he was finally able to get his dream truck earlier this year. He has always been responsible, hardworking, and the breadwinner of our family. I may be biased, but I know in my heart that he deserves this.
One of the biggest challenges we are facing now is that very truck. Because of the timing of everything that happened, selling or trading it in is almost impossible — we would be far too underwater, and I would have to come up with the remaining balance outright. My only other option would be a voluntary repo, which would ruin the credit I’ve worked so hard to build. And since my two teenage daughters will likely have to return to the States before we do, I need to protect my credit so they have security if they need it.
That’s why I’m starting what I’m calling the If I Had a Dollar Challenge. The idea is simple: if 72,000 people gave just one dollar, we could pay off the truck and bring it with us to El Salvador, where my husband can continue working as the hardworking man he has always been. Thankfully, El Salvador has a program that helps relocating families like ours bring vehicles over, which makes this dream possible.
I also want to be completely transparent: if we do not reach the full goal, every dollar will still go directly toward the truck payments, our move, and/or other legal expenses tied to this situation. Nothing will be wasted. Every single gift — no matter the size — will help keep our family stable while we navigate this transition.
My goal is to raise these funds by the end of October, before the next scheduled truck payment in November. At that point, I will need to make a final decision about what to do about his truck even if it ends up being that I have to do a voluntary repo.
My husband doesn’t even know I am creating this fundraiser — I would love for it to be a surprise for him when we are finally together again.
We have always kept God at the center of our family, and I know that with Him, anything is possible — even this impossible ask. The Bible says, “Ask, and it will be given to you; seek, and you will find; knock, and the door will be opened to you.” I am holding onto that promise with faith, even if it’s only the size of a mustard seed.
Even if you cannot give financially, you can still help by sharing this campaign so it reaches more people.
From the bottom of my heart, thank you for reading, for praying, and for helping in any way you can. I believe God has a plan, and I trust Him to place this story in the hands of the right people.
With love and gratitude,
Amy
