Ian Elfman Eagle Scout Service Project
Donation protected
Hello, my name is Ian Elfman. I am currently a Life Scout in Troop 642 in Houston, Texas working towards my Eagle Rank.

I began my scouting adventure at age 7 with the Cub Scouts, and at 12 moved up to Boy Scouts. I am now a Life Scout having completed 37 merit badges, held several positions of responsibilities, including Patrol Leader, Assistant Patrol Leader, Quartermaster, and Troop Guide. I remain very active with our troop and its activities. My long journey is now at the point where I am working toward earning the highest and most honored rank in Scouting, that of Eagle Scout.
To earn the Eagle rank I must plan, develop, and provide leadership to others in a service project helpful to the community. For my Eagle Scout Project, I have chosen to helpSummerhouse Houston. Summerhouse Houston is a recreational center for adults with IDD (intellectual or developmental disability). Their program focuses on four primary areas: Employment, Volunteerism, Community Engagement and Family Support.
Summerhouse Houston needs a new swing set to replace a much-loved tree swing that they used enjoy. I have designed an adult sized and durable swing set that will include not only a tire swing but also two regular swings so three adults can play at the same time. To serve the needs of adults, the swing set will consist of three posts set in concrete with a crossbeam. The posts will be three 6”x6” posts glued and bolted together. The intention is that this swing set gives joy to Summerhouse Houston residents for the next 20+ years.
Additionally, we will lay a 3” deep bed of rubber mulch 6’ around the entire swing for safety with a border.
This project will require the help of other scouts in my troop. This helps them collect service hours to satisfy their own rank requirements. I need approximately $5,500 in materials (wood, mulch, border, weed barrier, swings, tire & hardware). The wood and the mulch are the most expensive parts of this project at about $700 each.
As part of my project, I am required to request donations to fund materials necessary for my project. Like much in Scouting, this is a learning experience for me to not only conceive of and execute a service project, but to bring others along in the name of service to the community.
Any financial assistance you can offer to help me achieve my goal of completing this project will be greatly appreciated. No amount is too small, and in the unlikely event any funds remain after the project is finished, they will go directly to Summerhouse Houston for assistance with other projects.
Thank you for your support!
