Medical Mission Trip to Guatemala

Hi, ya'll!

Every year American Medical Student Association (AMSA) leads an international medical mission trip. For the Spring 2018 semester, AMSA has decided to head to Guatemala help a community with some medical needs. I've been accepted this year to join the 2018 Guatemala  AMSA team! Whoooooo!
We will be going to the Guatemala Mission Trip during spring break of 2018. During the mission trip, we will be checking in and triaging patients, shadowing doctors, running our pharmacy, and playing with kids from the area. The community we will be serving will be given free medical by our team. Hopefully, we will be able to provide them with the knowledge on how they can continue to take care of themselves after we have left.
The funds raised will be used to pay for plane tickets, lodging, food, transportation in Guatemala, and medical supplies needed for the trip. The first payment towards this trip is due on November 15, 2017.

Why I Want To Go

Travel the world to find the beautiful corners, but live in the world to create beauty.

Through service, one can create something beautiful in the world or make something more beautiful. The beauty can have many faces, like more knowledge, better understanding, the laughter of a playing child, a box of food for a hungry family, a companion to talk to, or a place to seek refuge.

During my last mission trip to the Valley in Texas, we volunteered at a respite center in the Valley and I came across families that were immigrating to the United States because of the food scarcity or war in their country, better medicine, and more work and school opportunities. It made me wonder what I can do for the people in those areas of the world that couldn’t travel to the U.S.

Right now, I don’t know what it is, but I do know the world can change and show me through this mission trip. I want to continue to learn more about the medical field in different cultures and environments. Last time, it helped me start to figure out what kind of doctor I want to be. Also, choosing how to improve lives in a lasting manner in a medical setting and outside of one too. Also, I want to work in a team in a medical setting again because one of the most important things I learned from the Valley trip is that you can’t always change something by yourself.

I hope to see the world differently by witnessing a culture and lifestyle completely different from the U.S., the differences in interactions between doctor and patient, and between Guatemalans. I want to continue to practice what I learned from my last mission trip, volunteering in Waco, and school. Also, continue to empower and help others feel accepted like we did on the Valley mission trip. We did this by showing patients how to better take care of themselves, providing patients access to a doctor, and clapping for immigrants as they walked through the doors of the respite center.

My Road to Becoming Physician

I want to continue to take ownership and initiative of the road to my vocation as a future doctor and a woman of service. This experience could impact my life and vocation by showing me another way to serve communities whether it be in the U.S or in another country. This experience could show me where I need to improve my manners of living and knowledge of the medical field. This experience will answer some questions I have regarding medicine and service but will provide me with more questions to answer actively in my life afterward. They will be questions I wouldn’t have if I remain in one place. What comes best in life comes with a journey and patience.

Thank you all so much for taking the time to read my story! I'm grateful for ya'll and the support. If it isn't possible to donate, then I only ask for your thoughts and prayers. Thank you!
