Hi everyone- If you're here reading this, I assume you have some sort of connection to the family or our sweet Olivia. Or you may be here to read her story and want to help out.
On Thursday, February 20th, our normally healthy 14-year-old Olivia suddenly developed a headache and experienced unsteadiness, leading to a series of multifaceted medical procedures, including three surgeries (two brain surgeries and a sinus cavity washout), with at least three to four additional surgeries planned. The family is embarking on an extended and challenging journey, with Olivia currently receiving care in the PICU, where she will remain for at least the next 7 weeks, awaiting the resolution of the brain infection. Once the infection is cleared, the medical team will remove the EBD drain from her skull, which is currently draining fluid, and replace it with a permanent shunt to facilitate normal fluid drainage around the brain. This treatment is required due to Olivia's severe brain injury, which has compromised her brain's ability to absorb fluid normally.
After the EBD is successfully replaced with the shunt, Olivia will be moved to another floor in the hospital for an unknown duration. Once she is discharged from Children's Hospital, Olivia will have to spend time at a rehabilitation facility not close to her home for an unspecified period before she can go back home.
Once Olivia is able to return home, she will require extensive care, including regular visits from nursing professionals and physical therapists. This family's life has dramatically changed in an instant, with everyday expenses, bills, and groceries compounded by the need to relocate to a more handicap-accessible home. This family is facing a new challenge. Jessica is currently staying at the hospital with Olivia, while Jeffrey is working and caring for their other two children at home. As they navigate this difficult time with reduced income, please consider offering your support if you're in a position to do so. If financial assistance is not possible, know that your prayers and positive thoughts are a powerful gift. Let's surround Olivia and her family with love and prayers. God bless.
