Hello everyone,

Thank you for taking a moment to visit this fundraising campaign. My name is Shavel, and I am a Social Worker and mental health therapist. I was raised in Dumfries, St. James, Jamaica and later built strong personal ties in Clarendon.

Jamaica is not just my birthplace — it’s home, and the people affected by Hurricane Melissa are my family, my friends, and my community.

What Happened

On October 28, 2025, Hurricane Melissa made landfall in western Jamaica, becoming one of the most powerful storms the island has ever seen. Entire communities were devastated — homes damaded/destroyed, roads washed away, crops and livestock lost, and many families left with nothing but the clothes they had on.

Thousands of people, including my own loved ones, are facing unimaginable hardship as they struggle to rebuild their lives and restore some sense of normalcy.

The main outcry is for food, water, clothing, household furnishings, and supplies to fix/rebuild their homes.

The Scale of the Damage

The storm has been described by Jamaican leadership as one of the worst in the country’s history, with early damage estimates already at US$6–7 billion. In some areas, the agricultural sector has taken a huge hit — for example, about 41,000 hectares of farmland were affected, with losses estimated around J$29.5 billion. In some reports, that damage is forecast to be even higher, once full assessments are done.

This level of destruction has touched nearly every part of life — housing, infrastructure, agriculture, utilities, and livelihoods.

Behind these numbers are real people: parents trying to repair broken homes, elderly residents displaced by flooding, lack of basic amenities, children without beds, and families unsure of how they’ll recover.

Why I Started This Campaign

After checking in with family and friends post Melissa, the cries for help and relief grew louder. I have also learnt of many others from the community I grew up in about their current needs — not for luxuries, but for necessities: food, clothing, somewhere dry to sleep, and materials to fix walls, roofs, and other parts of the home lost to the storm.

I cannot meet these needs alone, which is why I’m inviting you to stand with me in supporting those who are hurting the most.

I'm choked up everyday when I see the strength and resilience of my people. In the midst of disaster and despair, there is still so much joy in their hearts which has encouraged me to do more.
