Wie ihr wahrscheinlich mitbekommen habt, hat Hurricane Melissa katastrophale Zerstörung angerichtet, die Bilder aus Jamaica sprechen für sich. Die Regierung hat die Insel zum Katastrophengebiet erklärt und uns bleibt nichts weiter übrig als zu handeln.

Deutsche Medien haben lange nicht ausreichend und detailliert genug darüber berichtet, was mich sehr enttäuscht hat. Dementsprechend gehe ich davon aus, dass im deutschsprachigen Raum womöglich weniger für Spenden mobilisiert werden wird.

Leider habe habe ich den Kontakt zu meiner Familie vor einigen Tagen verloren. Ich wollte eigentlich erst warten, bis meine Familie vor Ort mir sagen kann, was den Locals wirklich hilft. Damit wollte ich eine gewisse Transparenz für diesen Spendenpool gewährleisten. Ich habe mich nun dagegen entschieden, tatenlos in Deutschland rumzusitzen, denn: time is of the essence. Alle betroffenen in Jamaica werden in den nächsten Tagen, Wochen und Monaten finanzielle Unterstützung brauchen. Zum Wiederaufbau ihrer Häuser und Communities, der Infrastruktur usw.

Hello everyone,

As you’ve probably heard by now, Hurricane Melissa has caused catastrophic destruction, the images coming out of Jamaica speak for themselves. The government has declared the island a disaster area, and we have no choice but to take action.

German media have unfortunately not reported on the situation in enough detail, which has been very disappointing to me. Because of that, I assume that there might be less mobilization for donations in German-speaking countries.

Sadly, I lost contact with my family a few days ago. I had initially wanted to wait until they could tell me directly what kind of support locals truly need. That way, I could ensure more transparency about how donations are used. However, I have now decided that I can’t just sit here in Germany doing nothing, since time is of the essence. Everyone affected in Jamaica will need financial help in the coming days, weeks, and months — to rebuild their homes, communities, and infrastructure.
