Imagine losing everything to a hurricane. This has been the reality for many in our community. Our Colonia, Campo Azul, has faced severe hurricane damage in the past (most recently Hurricane Nora and Lidia) leaving families without homes and hope. We can't let this happen again.

Imagínese perderlo todo a causa de un huracán. Esta ha sido la realidad para muchos en nuestra comunidad. Nuestra Colonia, Campo Azul, ha enfrentado severos daños por huracanes en el pasado (como los huracanes Nora y Lidia), dejando a familias sin hogar y sin esperanza. No podemos permitir que esto vuelva a suceder.

We are commencing to build a breakwater structure in the riverbed to shield our community from future hurricane flooding. This barrier will will be composed of large rocks boulders and filled in with smaller filler materials. This will help protect dozens of homes which unfortunately cannot be insured. Many residents are low income families with very limited ability to contribute financially and have been abandoned by their government when it comes to getting resources provided to fix the situation. It will also ensure the safety of our community members. There is only one road in and out to access the colonia, part of which has already been washed out and is at risk of becoming completely destroyed and impassable. During hurricane evacuations the community has often had to flee on foot due to the inability to get out by vehicle.

We want to preserve the future of this small colonia and the vecinos who continually band together to strengthen the resources available to them. We must prevent the devastating impact on our local economy and environment and cannot do it alone.

Estamos comenzando a construir un espigon en el río para proteger a nuestra comunidad de futuras inundaciones por huracanes. Esta barrera estará compuesta de piedras grandes y se rellenará con materiales de relleno más pequeños. Esto ayudará a proteger decenas de viviendas que lamentablemente no pueden asegurarse. Muchos residentes son familias de bajos ingresos con una capacidad muy limitada para contribuir financieramente y han sido abandonados por su gobierno cuando se trata de obtener recursos para solucionar la situación. También garantizará la seguridad de los miembros de nuestra comunidad. Sólo hay un camino de entrada y salida para acceder a la colonia, parte del cual ya ha sido arrasado y corre el riesgo de quedar completamente destruido e intransitable. Durante las evacuaciones por huracanes, la comunidad a menudo ha tenido que huir a pie debido a la imposibilidad de salir en vehículo.

Queremos preservar el futuro de esta pequeña colonia y de los vecinos que continuamente se unen para fortalecer los recursos disponibles para ellos. Debemos evitar el impacto devastador en nuestra economía y medio ambiente locales y no podemos hacerlo solos.

To build the breakwater structure that is needed will cost upwards of $30,000 CAD dollars (about 390,000 MXN) which includes the costs of materials, labor, and necessary permits.

About half of the money has been put forward by residents already, but this gofundme will hopefully help get the rest of the way there. Every donation, no matter how small, brings us one step closer to a safer future.

Our small, forgotten colonia has been hit hard by hurricanes, partucularñy the last 5 years, with the river more than tripling in size last year alone. Residents have lots their lots due to the erosion and now have nowhwere to build and worse, a home just a few hundred meters upstream from us completely collapsed into the river and was washed away. It is believed that the cause of this is due to Hotel development further downstream thus this could never have been predicted over a decade ago when people started making this area home. And although we are in a tourist city, because we are off the beaten path, sadly the government does not come to our aid with hurricane relief efforts. All that to say, that by contributing to this campaign, you're helping to protect lives and homes from future flooding, and complete destruction.
