My parents are Helen and Jack Jenkins. For the duration of my formative years, my parents worked long hours, sacrificing things, and did without to give me the opportunities I've been afforded. They have lived humbly and proudly in a small neighborhood in Harlem Heights, Florida. My mother and father have lived in their home for 54 years. My father was one of the carpenters contracted to help build my mother's home, and that's how he and my mother met. It's a modest house from two people with humble means, but it was filled with 54 years of love, laughter and memories. Hurricane Ian destroyed all of it on September 26-28.
There is nothing left. Everything on the interior of the home(including the building frame) was wiped out by Hurricane Ian. Furniture, electronics, home goods, family pictures, everything. All gone. I'm not sure where we can even start. We may try to rebuild, but we are at the mercy of foundational issues of the land and the existing structure. I want to try and help them recover what I can, to replace what is replaceable. As I said, everything is gone. My wife and I are committed to giving them everything we can to rebuild their lives and ensure they live as comfortably as possible. Your generosity is humbling and received as a blessing by anyone who gives. I hope that we can somehow fill this void. That somehow, we can make them somewhat complete. After almost 60 years of being together, my parents are starting over.
