Hurricane Fiona Destroyed Uninsured Home
Hi, my name is Megan and I am fundraising for my uncle and my cousin to be able complete repairs after being rescued from their home during hurricane Fiona. The home was not insured and does not qualify for any help under the disaster financial assistance because it was not uninsurable.
My uncle Richard MacDonald, a senior citizen, and my cousin Shawna who has been physically disabled since she was a child, had to be rescued from their house in Sydney Mines in the early house of the morning during the hurricane.
A VERY large tree hit the roof of their home and they had to call for emergency help.
While in the process of rescuing my cousin, who is wheelchair bound, unbelievably two more trees fell on the house - breaking her ramp, back deck and destroying the front steps. Rescuers had to use planks to build a ramp to get her out.
As if this was not traumatic enough, we found out that the house very regretfully was not insured due in part to their extremely limited income.
If our family members cannot get help to complete repairs, they will not have a home they can go back to (at least, not anytime soon). With very little spending money already, we do not know what options there will be if that happens but we do know they do not deserve to be out of a home. Their lives have not been easy but the one thing they knew they'd have was a roof over their head. Now that roof has been damaged by trees and there is no hope of repairing it with no insurance.
We do not know yet the full extent of the damage until it is safer to look into things but these are rough estimates for what we know:
back deck and accessible ramps 30.000
front step 1000.
Repairs to roof and chimney flu ball park 15.000.
Inside damage mostly from rain 5.000.
Siding 2.000.
Tree removal alone was estimated by one company at 15.000, but they think they have found someone for under 10,000.
If what we raise is not enough, any money received will be spent to at least make the house habitable or for another place to stay. But they really want back in their home.
